THE FORMER CIVIC HOSPITAL THE STUDY EXHIBITION
SANTA MARIA MADDALENA

THE SOUL OF VOLTERRA

The former civic hospital of Santa Maria Maddalena, first recorded in the 12th century, has undergone meticulous restoration thanks to the foresight of the Cassa di Risparmio di Volterra SpA and the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Volterra

…with a view to unearthing the Etruscan, Roman and medieval remains preserved inside it.

In the entrance hall accessed via the loggia giving onto Piazza San Giovanni one can see the remains of a Roman structure (possibly a water cistern) inside which the early Christians built a church.

The former Civic Hospital of Santa Maria Maddalena, now owned by the Fondazione della Cassa di Risparmio di Volterra, currently hosts a state-of-the-art Study Centre for conferences and seminars and an Exhibition Centre which also houses the donations of works of art that a number of Volterran and Italian artists have made to the Fondazione over the years.
